Are pre-level boosters worth it?

Before a hard level starts, the game offers to let you bring in boosters — an extra striped tile, a colour bomb, a couple of free moves. They cost coins, and the screen is designed to make saying yes feel sensible. Sometimes it is. Often it's the most wasteful thing you can do with your coins. The difference comes down to what the level's actual problem is.

Why the offer is tempting on purpose

The pre-level screen appears right after a loss, when you're frustrated and the level feels unfair. That's not an accident — it's the moment you're most likely to spend. Recognising the timing helps you step back: the question isn't "do I want to win this level", it's "will this specific booster fix the specific reason I lost".

Before you buy, name why you lost. Ran out of moves with the goal almost done? A free-moves or head-start booster helps. Never got the right colour? A pre-placed colour bomb helps. Board choked by blockers? Most pre-level boosters won't touch that — save your coins.

When a pre-level booster earns its cost

  • You're losing by one or two moves. A "+5 moves" or a head-start booster that starts you closer to the goal is genuinely efficient here, because you were already almost winning.
  • The level is a collect goal for a scarce colour. A colour bomb pre-placed on the board gives you a reliable way to hit that colour, which is exactly the thing the level was denying you.
  • It's a milestone level during an event. If winning also banks an event reward, the maths shifts — you're buying two things, not one.

When it's a waste

  • Blocker-heavy levels. A single extra striped tile does nothing about chocolate spreading or crates choking your columns. The fix there is move order, not a booster — see the blocker field guide.
  • You lost by a lot. If you finished far from the goal, one booster won't bridge the gap. You need a different approach to the board, not a head start.
  • You have plenty of lives. A free retry costs nothing but a few minutes. If you're not short on lives or under event pressure, just play it again and apply what you learned.

The cheaper alternative

Most levels that feel like they need a paid booster actually need one free retry plus a change of plan: read the goal properly, clear low, freeze the spreaders first, and save your in-board specials to combine. The boosters you win from daily events are the ones to lean on, because they cost you nothing. Spend coins only on the narrow cases above, where the booster fixes the exact reason you lost — and let the retry button handle the rest.

Played this way, your coin balance drifts upward instead of down, and you'll have a stockpile ready for the genuinely brutal levels where a head start is worth it.
